Will I hit That Deer?
Hitting deer on the road is a very real problem in Durango, Colorado. I wanted to look at the things that go into hitting a deer like speed, distance and time. So I made a spreadsheet in order to help solve this problem. The first part is the constraints of the car and deer. You can put in any number in order to solve for your specific car. Then the first calculations are the minimum and maximum distances that you will hit the deer. You can solve this by finding how long it would take the deer to get into your lane and then find how far away you would be in that time. If you find that distance, then you need to find what distance you need to stop. You can do this through the spreadsheet program that I made. Once you find these distances subtract the first one from the second one. If the number is negative then you will hit the deer and if it is positive then you won’t hit the deer.
